Used SUVs for Sale in Hillside, NJ

Sport utility vehicles are the largest segment on our Hillside lot, and it is not close. That reflects how North Jersey actually drives: a vehicle here needs ground clearance for an unplowed side street in Irvington, all-wheel drive for the ramp onto the Parkway in freezing rain, a cargo area that swallows a Costco run in Union, and a footprint that still fits a Montclair driveway. Our used SUV inventory is built around vehicles that do all four, mostly from the last three to six model years.

From Compact Crossovers to Full-Size Three-Rows

At the compact end we regularly stock the BMW X1, X2 and X3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, GLB and GLC, Audi Q-series, Lexus NX, Genesis GV70 and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and Velar — the sweet spot for a commuter who wants a raised seating position without a full-size vehicle's fuel bill. In the middle sit the BMW X5 and X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Acura MDX. At the top we carry three-row and full-size SUVs including the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Maybach GLS, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Land Rover Defender. Electrified options such as the BMW iX and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe appear as we source them.

All-Wheel Drive and New Jersey Winters

The large majority of the SUVs we sell are all-wheel or four-wheel drive, and in this climate that is the right default. What matters just as much, and gets overlooked constantly, is tires: an all-wheel-drive SUV on worn all-season rubber will lose to a front-wheel-drive sedan on proper winter tires every time. When you look at a vehicle here, look at the tread depth and the date codes with our team, and factor a set into your budget if the car will spend February in Essex or Union County. It is a far cheaper conversation to have on the lot than in a ditch on Route 78.

Two Rows or Three: Choosing Honestly

The third row is the decision most families get wrong in both directions. If you carry five or more people more than a couple of times a month, buy the three-row — a BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, Yukon or Grand Wagoneer gives you real seats and, just as importantly, real cargo room behind them. If you are buying a third row for occasional carpool duty, a mid-size two-row with a large cargo area is usually the better vehicle for the other 350 days of the year, and it will be easier to park and cheaper to fuel. Third-row availability, captain's chairs and seating capacity are listed on every vehicle detail page so you can filter before you drive over.
