What matters just as much, and gets overlooked constantly, is tires: an all-wheel-drive SUV on worn all-season rubber will lose to a front-wheel-drive sedan on proper winter tires every time. When you look at a vehicle here, look at the tread depth and the date codes with our team, and factor a set into your budget if the car will spend February in Essex or Union County. It is a far cheaper conversation to have on the lot than in a ditch on Route 78.

Two Rows or Three: Choosing Honestly

The third row is the decision most families get wrong in both directions. If you carry five or more people more than a couple of times a month, buy the three-row — a BMW X7, Mercedes GLS, Yukon or Grand Wagoneer gives you real seats and, just as importantly, real cargo room behind them. If you are buying a third row for occasional carpool duty, a mid-size two-row with a large cargo area is usually the better vehicle for the other 350 days of the year, and it will be easier to park and cheaper to fuel.
